Preview Barcelona vs Gimnàstic Tarragona
While the 2020/21 La Liga season kicks off on Saturday, Barcelona won't start their campaign in the Spanish First Division until September 27, just over two weeks later. Until then, the Blaugrana will be preparing with friendly matches, starting this weekend against Gimnàstic Tarragona.

While there is nothing at stake in this game, this match is intriguing nonetheless and for many reasons. First of all, this will be Ronald Koeman's first game in charge of his old club, having left his post with the Dutch national team to replace Quique Setien. It is unknown if the Dutch strategist is the man who will bring the club back to its glory days, but the player will have a chance to prove what he is all about in Saturday's friendly.

Following their horrific 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League, a result that followed their loss of the league title to Real Madrid, it was clear that Barcelona was in dire need of a change. Chaos ensued in the immediate aftermath of that historic European defeat, and the biggest fiasco was the Lionel Messi transfer saga.

And here is the next most interesting part of the Gimnàstic Tarragona tie. The iconic Argentinian delivered a transfer request in an attempt to force a free transfer to Man City, as rumors suggested. However, the Blaugrana refused to terminate his contract and stated that he had to pay his huge $ 825 million so that he could leave his 20-year-old club.

The six-time Ballon d'Or would go on to give an explosive interview in which he confessed his desire to leave and criticized the club's sports project, or the lack of it. Despite this, he revealed that he would stay as the only route to a way out was through a court battle and that was not an option he wished to exercise. In addition, he reiterated his commitment to the club, insisting that although he really wanted to leave, his love for the Camp Nou and the desire to win trophies for his team did not diminish.

Messi and Koeman have spoken and the whole transfer saga seems to be water under the bridge between the player and the coach. Anyway, it will be interesting to see how the captain fares after being forced to stay, if he is given minutes.

Team news
The Catalan giants will be left without Ansu Fati. The sensational youngster, who made his debut for Spain and scored his first goal at La Furia Roja during the recent international break, will now be forced out of this friendly. The teenager suffered "a bruise on his right hip from training on Friday," according to the club.

Miralem Pjanic is scheduled to join the team in the next few days and will therefore be sitting outside as well. Fans will be excited to see if Francisco Trincão will make his debut, as he joined the club after signing for the club in January. Also, it will be interesting to see if Philippe Coutinho shows up after Koeman secured his place at the club.
