Argentina vs Chile Live | Copa America 2021 | Prediction and Match Preview

Chile has been hot and cold recently, but their performances at the final continental tournament over the last three editions should not be underestimated.

Preview of Argentina

Since losing 2-0 to Brazil in the Copa America 2019 semi-finals, Argentina has gone undefeated in 13 international matches, including friendlies (W7, D6).

Despite scoring the first goal in each of their last three World Cup qualifying games, Argentina failed to win twice in a row, drawing back-to-back games against Chile and Colombia.

Returning to the Estadio Olimpico Nilton Santos may rekindle some painful memories in the La Albiceleste camp. Their most recent visit here resulted in a 1-0 extra-time defeat to Germany in the 2014 World Cup final.

Argentina has lost each of the four tournament finals since winning the Copa America in 1993, including the two most recent ones to Chile in 2015 and 2016.

Preview of Chile

Chile is unbeaten in three international matches in 2021 (W1, D2), despite conceding exactly one goal per game on each occasion.

This Chilean generation has already won two Copa America titles in the last three editions, but they have since suffered a massive setback.

After failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup finals, La Roja will be desperate to start a new winning streak against a team they have yet to defeat in their last ten competitive meetings (90 minutes only – D4, L6).

The fact that the tournament is being held in Brazil may be a psychological blow to Chile's chances of winning the competition, given that they have failed to advance past the group stage four times in the five previous tournaments held there.

Players to Watch in Argentina vs. Chile

Lionel Messi of Argentina (Barcelona)

After losing four career finals, Messi may be facing his last realistic chance to win his first major international trophy.

The Barcelona stalwart is looking for his first international goal from open play since June 2018, with each of his three Argentina goals coming from the penalty spot since the start of 2020. (rebound on missed penalty against Brazil included).

Arturo Vidal of Chile (Inter Milan)

With Alexis Sanchez ruled out due to a foot injury, Arturo Vidal of Inter Milan will have to step up and lead Chile against Argentina.

With four goals, including a brace against Peru in November 2020, the experienced midfielder leads his country in the ongoing 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign.
